Discord Opens its Social SDK Communication Features, Powering New Era of Social Play

Now game developers can integrate Discord’s trusted voice, messaging, and social features directly into their titles using the Discord Social SDK

SAN FRANCISCO, August 13th, 2025 – Today, Discord announced its powerful in-game communication tools, including high-quality voice chat, cross-platform messaging, and linked channels, are now available to developers through the Discord Social SDK. Previously launched in closed beta earlier this year, the Social SDK can now be used commercially to bring Discord’s trusted voice and messaging features directly into games, connecting players for longer playtime and improving multiplayer experiences.

Developers that integrate the Social SDK in eligible games unlock powerful social features that enhance in-game communication and drive stronger player retention. Discord data shows that players who link their accounts through the SDK return more frequently resulting in more active days in-game. By unifying friends lists, players can seamlessly connect with their Discord contacts from within the game and continue conversations with in-game friends directly on Discord, making it easier to team up, stay connected, and jump back in, whenever they’re ready to play.

Designed to streamline player connections and increase engagement, the Social SDK extends a game’s reach into Discord’s highly engaged community of over 200 million monthly active users globally who collectively spend more than 1.9 billion hours each month playing games while on the platform. Discord is today’s digital living room designed for gaming where close-knit friends and community groups influence each other potentially more than a developer’s typical marketing or traditional ads can. In fact, over 40% of players on Discord join the same game within an hour of watching a friend stream (source: Discord internal data).

With this milestone launch, developers ranging from indie developers to major game publishers can now integrate the same high-quality voice and messaging infrastructure that powers Discord’s global community, including:

  • Cross-Platform Chat: Players can keep the conversation around the game going across desktop, console, and mobile, even without a Discord account. Direct messages between users can show up in both the game and Discord, allowing players to talk to their Discord friends without leaving the game.
  • Linked Channels: Players who link their Discord accounts can connect their in-game chat channels to specific Discord text channels of their choosing, providing a space for guilds, groups, and squads of all sizes to connect with messaging that syncs across both the game and Discord.
  • Voice Chat: Players can enjoy some of the highest quality audio chat available today, powered by the same technology behind Discord’s voice tools that have made it the gold standard for video game communications.

“Discord’s Social SDK brings our voice and messaging technology combined with the power of Discord’s massive and uniquely engaged audience directly into any game, whether you're an indie team or a global studio. We've spent over a decade building trusted social infrastructure for millions of Discord players and communities around the world. Now, developers can bring that same seamless communication directly into their games to deepen engagement and connect players for longer playtime. Discord’s Social SDK makes it easier for players to talk to their friends while they play with less friction and a more intuitive, social experience across platforms.” – Stanislav Vishnevskiy, Co-Founder and CTO at Discord

Powering Social Play in Today’s Most Popular Games

Since launching earlier this year, the Social SDK has quickly gained traction among a diverse and growing ecosystem of multiplatform developers. Early partners such as Omeda Studios, Tencent Games, and Marvel Rivals have already integrated in-game communications features to enhance the player experience. Additional partners, including Embark Studios, Dreamhaven, Halfbrick Studios, and Digital Bandidos, are also actively working to bring Discord features into their titles.

“Adding Discord’s Social SDK to Predecessor has been a huge win for both our players and our business. The Social SDK has solved a range of elements we were missing like built-in voice and text chat that enable us to offer something our players already love and use daily, right inside our game. Voice chat, in particular, has been a standout feature, which is crucial for real-time strategy and teamwork in a MOBA, and players have told us it makes the game more engaging, social and fun. This level of integration is already helping foster stronger in-game communities and deeper player retention.” – Robbie Singh, Co-Founder and CEO at Omeda Studios

“Integrating the Discord Social SDK has elevated how our players connect in Arena Breakout, making cross-platform chat and squad invites feel effortless. The Social SDK’s cross-platform, real-time communication tools have been vital to supporting our vision for immersive, social-first gameplay. Discord’s collaborative approach also allowed us to tailor the integration to our community’s needs, driving stronger engagement that perfectly serves our player community.” – Carter Xiong, Product Manager at Arena Breakout

New Upgraded Features

After extensive updates and testing, Discord has introduced upgrades that will make Discord’s chat features feel like they are tailor-made for a developer’s game.

  • Chat History for Active Lobbies: Players joining active lobbies can get up to speed the minute they join the chat. Soon, players will also be able to review their chat history before and after gameplay, enabling direct messages to continue between play sessions.
  • Custom Effect Processing for Audio: With the introduction of custom effect processing, developers can run Discord voice audio through their preferred sound middleware, like fmod or Wwise, giving players an enhanced audio experience, and even deeper immersion into their favorite gaming universe.
  • Improved Mobile Audio Experience: Players can continue to benefit from Discord’s high quality audio chat, with improved audio fidelity and connectivity, to keep mobile voice sessions connected for longer.
  • Diagnostic Support: With the commercial rollout of SDK, Discord has added audio diagnostic information for debugging, ensuring engineers can gain greater visibility into common audio concerns, such as echo cancellation and noise reduction.

These features are offered at no cost to developers and can be used without requiring players to have a Discord account.  Developers can begin integrating these features via the Discord Developer Portal. To unlock full access, developers will need to meet basic feature requirements and submit their integration for approval.
